The Inmate by Freida McFadden
dark
tense
fast-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Loveable characters? It's complicated

The reason why I love reading thrillers is because, if they're good, you end up getting a massive confidence boost for finishing them quickly. :')
I finished The Inmate extremely fast, however I was unsure as to how to rate it so I decided to think about it a bit more. I've concluded that I enjoyed the story and its pace but, as I've been reading McFadden's other books prior to this one, I can't say I liked it as much as the others. I think The Housemaid is still my favourite so far. Now I know I should probably judge it on its own but the structure in all these books is pretty similar if we're being honest so my brain decided to group them. Hey if it works, it works. The structure is keeping me entertained. 🤪
Feelings were mixed with this one. We have a dual timeline setting. The 'before' events were actually quite fun to read about - we get a bit of a Scream movie ambience in those chapters, a bit of creepiness, teenagers being teenagers, and voila a thrilling tension has been created. In the present chapters, although the characters we follow are the same, Brooke was slightly frustrating at time. Like girly come on, we can do better than this.
Like the previous books by this author I've read, this one's pacing was fast, it had its twists and it had some action throughout. Definitely not a bad one! Usually, I'm ok with unlikable characters but frustrating ones are a different case 🙈. That epilogue though was great. Perhaps one of the best epilogues in the thrillers I've read so far this year.
