Ask the Dust by John Fante
5.0
Loved it.
Short, can be read by a committed reader in one or two days. Took me longer as I left my copy in the office and locked myself out. Whoops.
I recommend this book to anyone who either a) enjoys creative writing, b) is currently down and out/ listless in their life or 3) has an historical interest in pre-boom Los Angeles.
Arturo Bandini is not particularly likeable but very real.
One thing that is strange in this book is its depiction of cannabis, which is over the top to the point of being ridiculous. If Camilla was written as an opioid addict it would have made more sense, but then of course you lose the Mexican connection. Not a big deal all in all, our views of cannabis have changed a lot over the last 80 years.
