The Cousins by Karen M. McManus
4.0
The Cousins is the newest mystery from Karen McManus. It follows the mystery surrounding Mildred Story, a woman who disinherited her children 24 years ago out of the blue. When her three grandchildren, Millie, Aubrey, and Jonah receive letters from their grandmother asking them to work on Gull Cove Island for the summer so she can get to know them, their parents convince them to go in hopes to get back into their mother's good graces. The three cousins don't know each other well, and all have their reserves for going, but end up going anyway. But there are more than their grandmother's secrets surrounding this island, some of which are deadly. Can the three cousins figure out what caused the disinheritance, or will the secrets they uncover put them at risk?
I really enjoyed The Cousins. I have gotten all of Karen's books through Audible, since I love that they are full cast read. I thought that the concept for this story was unlike any she has put out in the past which was fun, and the characters were interesting. I loved the mystery around the entire Story family, I feel like we potentially didn't even see every side to most of them, which left a little mystery. I also really enjoy that there are always smaller secrets that get revealed throughout the story because it helps keep it interesting, and The Cousins didn't disappoint. The problem I've had with stories like this in the past is I can guess the outcome before it happens, but there were secrets and the overall climax of the story was one I didn't see coming until the characters also figured it out, so that was really fun. The only reason for it not getting 5 stars is because it didn't blow me away, but it was really fun to read!
I would totally recommend The Cousins to anyone who is a YA mystery fan. There is plenty of plot, enough mystery, and interesting characters.
