I was initially drawn to this book because I noticed that the Author and I share the same first name. After reading the synopsis, I was intrigued to learn more about El-Kaliouby and her work in Emotion AI.

In the book's early chapters, El-Kaliouby recounts her life growing up as the eldest daughter in a Muslim household in Egypt. Frequently referring to herself as the "nice Egyptian girl", El-Kaliouby rarely broke the rules. She was a true academic, channeling all her energy into her curiosity, passions, and education. It was her intellectual curiosity and intense work ethic that led her to complete her Ph.D. at Cambridge University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. After completing her Ph.D., El-Kaliouby continued her research in Emotion AI in America, at the MIT Media Lab.

Torn between two worlds - the traditional values of the middle east and the progressive values of the West - El-Kaliouby explores what it means to be an ambitious woman in a world where women typically only have two roles: wife and mother. And yet despite societal pressures to be and act a certain way, El-Kaliouby still followed her dream. Had she listened to everyone around her and not her own inner voice, it's possible that she wouldn't be the trailblazing scientist that she is today.

Now a leading pioneer in Emotion AI, El-Kaliouby's story is nothing short of inspiring. Her work is rooted in her values and passion, making her the epiotime of what can happen when you stay true to yourself. Dedicated to bridging the gap between technology and human emotions, El-Kaliouby's groundbreaking contributions have propelled her to the role of founder and CEO of Affectiva—an AI startup whose technology is used by hundreds of companies around the world.

I've never resonated so much with a book in my life; I see a lot of parralells between El-Kalibouy and I. Her remarkable journey has ignited a fire within me, propelling me to constantly challenge myself, shatter societal limitations, and surpass the barriers I've placed upon myself.

If you're looking for a good memoir that discusses artificial intelligence, women in STEM, and what it means to shatter glass ceilings, then I'd highly recommend reading this book.
