The Family Experiment by John Marrs
5.0
In a futuristic world where reality intertwines with AI and virtual reality, there is a new way to have children. During a new AI competition show eleven lucky contestants will have an opportunity to raise a MetaBaby in the Metaverse. But there is a catch, there will only be one winning couple determined by viewer votes. What the reader should know is that every couple has secrets, but will their secrets eliminate them from the game?
Contestants who are unfortunate to lose will have their MetaBabies immediately deleted. However, the winning couple must choose whether to keep their MetaChild or to pull the plug allowing them to win 250,000 pounds and the chance to start their own family in the Real World. Just remember, this is all a game and the contestants will do whatever they can to win.
I enjoyed the thrill ride this book took me on, finishing it in only four hours. And the twists and turns had me guessing until the very end. I love how Marrs has created such a thought provoking speculative thriller universe. Marrs has written a futuristic sci-fi novel that makes one see how AI could alter our version of reality and how we interact with others. I would recommend readers start with The One and The Marriage Act before this book, however it is not required.
*Thank you to John Marrs, Hanover Square Press (HarperCollins), and Edelweiss for the DRC copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.
