Scream of the Haunted Mask (Goosebumps Horrorland #4) by R.L. Stine
4.0
What we’re slowly learning about these books is that they’re an updated version on the classic Goosebump tales. In this one, the haunted mask is back. Carly Beth doesn’t know what to be for Halloween, so when she goes to a Halloween store and an ugly green mask keeps calling to her… she feels the need to buy it. But when it’s put on… it doesn’t come off. For the most part, this was a pretty thrilling read, it was just scary enough for kids, that reading it as an adult is slightly comical, but has that tinge of creepiness to it. The babysitting plot was a little much, but it was to give our main characters a bit of depth, which was nice, but not exactly needed in an 160-page novel. Our characters in this felt a little more mature, but the reader still enjoyed them. The way this ended felt a bit abrupt, the pace was pretty even until it got to the end, then it really ramped up and just ended. The reader wasn’t expecting the story to just be over. It felt a little weird, but it was a good story up to that point. The continuation of Horrorland was good, we saw some of our other characters, and we’re noticing that what happens in Horrorland correlates to the story they were in, which is kinda cool. The reader is excited to see what comes next!
