Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
5.0
Never Let Me Go has been haunting my thoughts since I finished it, shuffling around like dirty laundry during a wash cycle. I hesitate to say too much as I would not want to spoil anyone's reading experience, especially a first read through. The specific plot details are less important than the overarching themes. And the more I ponder and discuss this book with those around me, the more I realize what a nightmare I was slowly led in to. Like wading in to a mountain lake one step at a time until it's become too cold, too deep, and you're treading water alone, scared of what's below you in the dark water.
I wish I had read this book with a book club so we could all share in this experience, and so we could discuss the value of life, of humanity, and the morality of it all. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to live? What does it mean to die? And what would it mean to know the harsh realities of our fates?
I'd truly recommend all to read this book. Then talk about it with a friend and let it haunt their thoughts too.
