Honor Among Thieves by Ann Aguirre, Rachel Caine

3.0

Zara has been in and out of rehab facilities for her antisocial behaviour. Refusing to move with her family to Mars, because living in a dome isn’t better than a prison cell. So when she does something that could land her in jail, instead of imprisonment, she’s recruited to join the Honors, a group of top humans hand-picked by the Leviathan – sentient alien ships, to explore space as their passengers. While on this voyage, she starts to feel at home for the first time with the people and beings she meets, but nothing can prepare her for the journey she’s about to embark on. This was a good start to a sci-fi trilogy. The reader enjoyed getting to know this world, despite the fact that it did feel like a few other young adult series told before. We could see how this one was trying to be different, it didn’t quite hit that mark, but the reader believes that this trilogy can get there. As for this one, there’s a lot of world building we had to put in place and understand, with lots to keep track of that it made this feel slightly daunting, not enough to give up, but enough to want to figure out how it’s all connected and what is going to happen to these characters. Speaking of characters, the reader got nothing from them. Zara was a bit wishy washy as a main character, she’s still growing and learning who she is, so the reader doesn’t fault her for that, but she just felt like weak lead. That being said though, this reader can’t wait to see the type of person she grows to become. There’s supposed to be this big romance, and this reader felt zero connection and it made it really hard to want to read about them. This reader wanted to feel more from the characters, but it just felt like we got surface level traits or traits that are very common, that it made them unforgettable. There’s still hope for this because the premise is very intriguing and the characters aren’t bad, they just need some refinement and development to become more significant and memorable. The pacing of this was really good though; it was fast-paced and then once we got closer to the end it was extremely so, as this reader read the last half of this in one day. All in all, this wasn’t the perfect read, but it was still good enough to want to continue to see where the plots go and these characters evolve.
