The Cusp of Dreadfulness: Fifteen Seasons in Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia by Margaret Winslow

3.0

I sped through this memoir of american professor winslow’s geologic fieldwork in Tierra del Fuego - rather than a cohesive memoir of self or place instead there are loosely linked chapters during which the explorer recalls interactions with select few people, distinct journeys & challenges met and overcome mostly in unforgiving conditions at the end of the world. This is a woman’s story. tales of ‘daring do’ are often shouldered with admissions of fear, uncertainty, and the contradictions that a woman who breaks most of the stereotypes lives everyday if she literally pursues the road less travelled by as she builds her career and her sense of self .

I, for one, am glad she wrote these episodes down alongside her memories of Tierra del Fuego and her reflections on their import to science, to industry, and for herself.
