When in Rome by Sarah Adams

Did not finish book. Stopped at 66%.
I’ve been reading a lot of heavy and/or dark stuff lately so i decided to pick up something light and fluffy, but this just didn’t work for me. It felt like a Hallmark movie in book form, but somehow more juvenile? The angst just wasn’t there.

Furthermore, there were a couple of things that just made me kind of uncomfortable. Mabel is Noah’s grandma’s best friend and basically helped raise him. For some reason, her race is brought into it in the beginning? “We look different, Mabel is Black and I’m white, but we both share the same general dislike for people being up in our business.”  I don’t see why this clarification was necessary. Saying she’s practically family, and you both dislike people being up in your business would’ve sufficed. It’s mentioned one other time that she’s black, and again I just don’t get why that was necessary.

The other thing that felt weird to me was the description of things about Noah as manly. “right next to where his muscular forearms are resting. My eyes get tangled up with the light dusting of masculine hair on them.” Why does his arm hair need to be described as masculine???
