The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff

Did not finish book.

1.0

This book was so awful. I wanted to like it so bad--mainly because I paid actual money for it rather than just borrowing it from the library--but it was so poorly written that I just couldn't.

The main issue with the writing was the tense. For some inexplicable reason this author is obsessed with past perfect tense and it made the book SO. HARD. TO. READ.

The characters could never just do anything. It wasn't they jumped or they gasped or they felt or they cried. Everything was They had jumped into the air and they had gasped when they had jumped because they had felt a shiver of emotion and they had cried when they had felt it.

THAT IS NOT READABLE. Ugh. Someone needs to send this author to a writer's conference and then maybe she can try again.

Also, I never got super into the characters. I maybe could've continued trudging through if the mechanics hadn't been so poor, but that just affects everything.
