Kiss of Fire by Rebecca Ethington
3.0
Sooo... This was a hard book to rate.
On one hand it really sucked me in. Ryland turned out to be so sweet (also I really liked that name. Joclyn, not so much).
On the other, there were a bunch of things that kinda annoyed me.
For example, there were conversations, especially towards the beginning that felt super rigid and forced, and made me keep thinking 'who the hell speaks like this in real life?'. Also all the OBVIOUS things that Joclyn took FOREVER to figure out. I get creating confusion in the MC as to not reveal all the plot twists. But, if knowing nothing, I can figure it out after two pages, then so should she! You need to start questioning the things that happen around you, Joclyn. Like yesterday.
The thing that took the cake, though, was how much of a helpless, useless coward Joclyn was in the end. They willingly took her to the 'final battle' (which usually doesn't happen), and the only things she did were fly away and hide! What the heck was up with that! After all the declarations of unparalled devotion and undying love, when she had the chance to save Ryland she totally threw it out the window! That pissed me off beyond words.
So, to be honest, I guess the ending kind of ruined the book for me. I'm hoping in the next one Joclyn grows a spine. Because if she doesn't, even if I really wanna how this story continues, I don't know if I'll be able to stand her.
And also, the last thing. Ilyan is sooo putting the moves on her. But knowing Joclyn she won't ever realize it. WAKE UP, GIRL! And, Ilyan I SEE YOU.
