Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

5.0

If I'm being honest I probably wouldn't have read this if my mom hadn't bought this on a whim one time and my class required a nonfiction book to read (and I wanted one on my Kindle). I don't care for comedians and I don't watch any of those late night shows, so I really only barely knew of Trevor Noah. Just from the occasional snapshot for a meme.

But I am so glad I read this. It definitely is not a funny book by any means, so if you're wanting to read for that reason I wouldn't suggest that. Like I said before, I didn't know about the guy so I wasn't necessarily reading to get a better understanding of him or whatever. I was reading really to learn. I didn't know much about Apartheid other than the basics, and I feel like I learned so much while reading this book. The bolded sections before each chapter really provided so much insight on the awful government South Africa was dealing with. And all throughout the chapters I just learned so much. I definitely recommend this book even if you're not a fan of him as a public figure.
