A great way to see the work conditions of governesses back in the days (Anne Brontë was herself a governess). The book focuses on castigating the loss of human values in the rich English high class of society. However, the themes and characters are treated with a *strong* religious bias : Agnes soon appears like an angel sent on Earth to fight off the diabolical instincts of this or that aristocrat family.
