The Long Journey to You by Vincent Traughber Meis
4.0
The Long Journey to You is a truly beautiful queer book. While it is a romance, it also presents a memoir-style story of an aging queer man named Nathan. I read The Long Journey to You as a standalone, but I have been informed that there is a book that comes before it and features a much younger Nathan. However, I had no problem reading this book on its own.
I personally feel that there aren't enough novels that focus on older queer folx. Nathan's story was bittersweet, but so enlightening to read because he has lived through so many important events that impacted the queer community (the assasination of Harvey Milk and the AIDS epidemic to name a couple). Not to mention that he lives with HIV.
The story features an age gap romance, as Mateo - Nathan's love interest - is about half his age. Even though the story seems to focus on Nathan, it does follow Mateo and his circumstances and is as much about him as it is about Nathan. The age difference between both Nathan and Mateo presented us with different viewpoints of queer issues at different ages, and it was really beautiful, and heartbreaking, to see.
If you like queer romance with a strong character emphasis, and some heartbreak, you simply must pick up this book. It is one of a kind.
