I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

5.0

This memoir is so vulnerable that the sincerity is practically dripping off of every word. Jennette McCurdy shares some dark truths about being in show business and the very complicated relationship she shared with her mother. While her mother forced her into a field that she herself didn't want to get into, she still pursued it knowing how happy it would make her mom. This eventually turns into her providing for her own family before she can drive, a responsibility no child should have. She gives insight to eating disorders, her relationship with her religion, the emotional strain of trying to "make it" in acting, some of the abuse from the children's-foot-fetishized Creator, substance abuse, and the cost of having a narcissistic parent. She has a sense of humor with it, so I'm hoping that means she's on the upswing of moving past these hard times in her life. There's no way I could possibly relate to every part of her story, but it's got moments that I'm sure many of us can find in our own lives. Her title alone definitely gives you an idea of just how honest she is in this memoir. It truly is heartbreaking, and it's hers to tell.

Thank you, Jennette, for sharing your story with us. I hope this isn't the last book of yours I add to my library.
