Yahweh Fighting from Heaven: God as Warrior and as God of Heaven in the Hebrew Psalter and Ancient Near Eastern Iconography by Martin G. Klingbeil

4.0

In this volume, Klingbeil brings together metaphor theory, ancient Near Eastern iconography, and the comparative method in order to illuminate two metaphors central to the Book of Psalms: God as warrior and God of heaven. Chapters 4 and 5 thoroughly examine the biblical texts and the iconographic motifs, respectively, and the information gleaned from these chapters alone makes this a worthwhile read. I found the comparisons (and contrasts) Klingbeil draws between the psalmic material and the iconographic evidence to be somewhat underwhelming. Overall, though, this is a very helpful resource, and it provides a good overview of some dominant motifs/concepts at work in both ancient Near Eastern art and the Hebrew psalter.
