Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin
5.0
It’s 3am. I haven’t put the book down since… almost 12 hours ago. But I finished it!
5 stars ⭐️
Coherent thoughts will come tomorrow, after some much-needed sleep
Okay, it's the next morning, let's go:
5 stars ⭐️
My copy is 532 pages, I read it in 1 day (2 technically, since it went past midnight, but I didn't sleep til I finished the book), and I already want to start my reread while I wait for my library hold on the sequel.
Though it's a little slow to start, and I almost knocked it down a half-star for that, once I got through the first 100 pages, I could not put it down. Shelby is a master at writing books that go from 0 to 100 in terms of action, and this Blood & Honey did that more than once. She manages to introduce new characters in such a way that it feels as if they've been there the entire time - they fit right in with our established characters, while still having their own unique voices and place for their backstories to be explored.
This series tends to have moments where the action gets kicked into overdrive, and Blood & Honey is no exception. There were several sections where I just couldn't put the book down for 50 pages or more. A shining example of a 2nd book in a trilogy, Blood & Honey wonderfully balances exposition, character development, and B&H's own plot with the buildup of narrative tension that is necessary for a 2nd book.
