The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick
4.0
If you need a book to remind you that you can start a new journey or go on a new adventure no matter the age, this is the one. Or if you need a book that makes you believe in fighting for decades-long marriages even when they are struggling, this is the one for that, too.
This is a wonderfully written book. I laughed, I cried, I was outraged, I was shocked. I didn’t guess the twist; it wasn’t obviously foreshadowed, and yet it was pulled off wonderfully.
My only note is that I wish some of the characters had a bit more backstory. I’d love for more of the MC’s kids to shine through, and maybe less of the ex-personal assistant haha. The husband was a bit flat at the beginning, but was fleshed out by the end. I think this was on purpose, though. The readers get to start caring about him as the MC is reminded of the reasons she cares for him.
I think I also just read this at a time where the theme of finding what you really care about strikes a cord. And I’ll always love books that encourage loving yourself the way you are and spreading joy rather than putting people down.
