The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness
3.0
I was kinda hoping this would be the last book of the series :/ I felt like the first book was just her sleeping all the time, the second was seemingly pointless-to-the-plot traveling back in time (and paralleled DODO too much to be enjoyable at all), and this one was just kinda…long?? I really wish the author didn’t make the babies such a main part of the story. I am a mom, I don’t need to read about being a mom in my free time. Oh my cats, and it’s like she didn’t do any research about being pregnant: none of her pregnancy issues made any sense at all!! There is wayyyyy too much unrealistic romance for my liking. It’s borderline cringy—do couples really kisssss that much in real life?!?! I also really struggle with seeing how the main character is supposed to be so special. She is just so-so to me throughout the stories. The plot started off ok enough in the first book but now I’m just rushing through to see if there’s a point. There were a lot of abrupt changes to main side characters that really weren’t explained. And a few major questions that go unanswered. I also have a personal issue when authors attribute heinous acts (like genocide) to “monsters.” We are the monsters, ma’am, not the vampires. I mean I think she handled it delicately but still, the implications made me uncomfortable as a reader.
