I want to understand, but I don't understand, why this author is so weird.

There were some repetitions on the characters in this book that I've seen in Murata's previous characters. The mimicry for one, but less so in this book. Also, the expectations of women even in modern society, which I completely understand. But this story begins extremely adorable, then it gets really dark, then gets so damn bizarre and I don't understand why. Why?!
