This was my second read of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and once again, I fell in love. I’m head-over-heels for Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Johnny, Dally, and even for Two-Bit.
•
This book did for me, what I felt The Catcher in the Rye was trying to do. It highlighted the teenage experience in a completely relatable way, and it felt effortless. It doesn’t matter that the situations may not be realistic in the current place or time. What matters is what’s underneath the action:  the feelings, the realizations, the humanity.

Whether you’re background is Soc, hood, or somewhere in between, there’s surely been a time that you’ve felt like an outsider and this book reminds us that while we may feel completely alone, we always have something in common with others. While the problems may differ, “Things are rough all over.”

This book is about violence and affection, slang and poetry, innocence and sacrifice, loss and love. It’s about life, and watching sunsets. It is not perfectly written and it is perfection.
•
NOTE:  The 50th anniversary edition has correspondence between the author, agent, and publisher; photos, and messages from the cast of the film adaptation. These were a treasure, a surprisingly wonderful addition.
