Missing from the Village: The Story of Serial Killer Bruce McArthur, the Search for Justice, and the System that Failed Toronto's Queer Community by Justin Ling
5.0
Like many people who live around Toronto and spend time in the Village, I followed the coverage of this case when it made it's way to the mainstream news cycle in 2017.
At the time, I don't recall any of the news outlets spending much time on who the victims actually were besides plastering their names and photos on the screen and in print. I appreciate that this book takes the time to offer a glimpse into who the victims were as people rather than focusing only on them as the victims of terrible violence.
If you're looking for a true crime book this won't fulfill your urge; but to his credit, Ling warns you of this right in the author's note. What made this book so engaging for me is the way Ling sets the scene and contextualizes Toronto's gay community and it's history. It's well researched and thorough in its exploration of not just the McArthur case, but The Village in general; both historically and at the time of the investigation. Ling is right: we need to do better, and it's books like this that can help the general population focus our attention where it needs to be.
