Still Just a Geek: An Annotated Collection of Musings by Wil Wheaton

4.0

I still have Just A Geek buried someplace in a box of books from my bedroom at my parents' house. I bought and read it on summer break from college. I was - and am - a huge Trekkie. Wil Wheaton has continued to stay in my sphere of visibility on the internet thanks to his excellent blog at wilwheaton.net and his TableTop and Titansgrave web series. I tried to live by, and frequently quoted, his mantra "Don't be a dick" during the late aughts and early 2010s.

I love the concept of re-visiting a memoir as an older person to see what holds up, and what doesn't, and why. The execution is a bit hard to swallow. So many footnotes that sometimes added value and insight, and sometimes disrupted the flow of the story being told. To top it all off, Wheaton has done some excellent work on himself and has dealt with alcoholism and made significant strides in unpacking and working through the abuse his parents dealt him as a child. Kudos to him, but it does make many of the footnotes repetitive in nature as he brings this up again and again and again.

The second half is a superb selection of blog posts from his website, and I heartily recommend it as a primer for what you get if you visit his site. Delightful musings on parenthood, board games, acting, Hollywood, Star Trek, stardom, and family. All worth reading. Wheaton has honed his voice and it shows, viewing his early writing in the first half of the book, and stories that he has crafted in the last decade.

As a reminder, depression lies. You have value. It's okay to ask for help, including getting help with your mental illness. And play more games.

Recommended to all Star Trek fans, autobiography lovers, and geeks who need to know they aren't alone.
