Honestly with each book, this series keeps getting better and better! Something about reading these books has not only strengthened my love for fantasy books, but ask introduced me to some of my new favorite characters such as, Celaena. The story line dove into Celaena’s family background, her true heritage, new worlds, and of course the danger and adventures that Celaena managed to find herself in.
After the ending from the previous book, my theory was correct and Celaena’s true identity was revealed. I was more surprised that I guessed correctly, but it made sense when looking back at the bread crumbs from the first two books. Celaena was sent on a new journey, her mission that entailed meeting with new characters, which included people she was related to. With the truth of Celaena’s identity revealed to Chaol (and obviously us the readers), she now needed to figure out a way to find and destroy the Wyrdkeys the King of Adarlan wanted. Not to mention, Celaena had to meet up with people from her past and face the reality of her past coming up.
Compared to the previous book, in “Heir of Fire”, Celaena was put to the test in ways I hadn’t seen from her before. Sure Celaena has had her fair share of literally enduring life or death situations, and brutality and trauma, but she always managed to come out the other end of it. This time around, the story highlighted Celaena’s still present grief of losing Nehemia, leaving behind Chaol, and essentially still coming to terms of all the difficulties she had to face so far. In a way, it seemed like all the grief and heartbreak were starting to catch up to Celaena. Also, while Celaena has usually always been able to take whatever’s been thrown at her, for once she was truly struggling when she started to train with Rowan. Obviously the stakes of her training were a lot since it relied heavily on her being able to shift but try as she might, Celaena tried to figure out how to tap into her Fae side/ use her powers.
Aside from the overall story of Celaena, this book also seemed to cover other characters stories as well from Chaol and Dorian to new characters like Manon, Aedion, Rowan, etc. I felt like while reading about Manon, Aedion was deliberate because, it really showcased that while Celaena was off training and trying to accomplish her mission, other things were at play, and by my calculations would come to light later on. Plus it was interesting to see how Chaol and Dorian after the events that occurred in the ending towards the last book. Each Chaol and Dorian were not only dealing with the aftermath, but also their own personal problems from magic to titles of lordship, and of course missing Celaena.
Now, with each book I’m fascinated by the characters, especially the male characters who end up developing feelings towards Celaena, but for once when I read about a certain silver haired Fae male by the name of Rowan… something told me to keep my eye on him. Rowan was literally the kind of character that if he heard you say something he didn’t like, he didn’t just tell you, he would literally show through actions *ahem hit, bite, punch* to get his point across. In other words, HELLO GRUMPY, VIOLENT, SILENT BUT DEADLY AND SOMEHOW ALLURING BEAUTIFUL FAE MALE WOOOOO!
The story was sectioned in parts. Part one: Heir of Ash set the scene for where Celaena and everyone else was at, and further touched upon the new developments set in the plot. Once again, Celaena was coming to terms with her powers, training, heritage, and still reeling with grief. Throughout part one Celaena was pushed to her limits and while it was difficult, she was able to see through her errors and learn more about herself. In addition, with the new characters such as, Rowan, we were able to see how he played a role in Celaena’s training and of course learn about his past. Part two: Heir of Fire… A LOT MORE REVELATIONS, BETRAYALS, ACTION AND AHHHH IT WAS AWESOME! But also kinda sad during some parts. Overall, the story was fantastic and as per usual with each book, I’m always entertained and loving this series!
