Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson

5.0

I loved Tress. This was even better. Who knew Brandon could write a compelling romance? Much more Cosmere-aware than Tress, so not something I'd recommend for an entry point necessarily.

This book felt thoroughly organic, unlike so much of Brandon's work, where you can tell that each event was carefully plotted to fit in with where the plot needed to go. Full of great anime/manga tropes, but not in such a way that requires knowledge of them to enjoy. (Loved the Major Armstrong moment with Tojin, which also turns out to be an important moment of character growth for Painter & Yumi.) Also loved that we got so much of Design.

[ending]
I loved the ending, with Hoid's fakeout epilogue, but I almost wish it had really been a sad ending. Maybe someday we'll get a true tragedy in the Cosmereā€”this certainly shows he could pull it off.
