Dracula by Bram Stoker
3.0
I have a love for horror in general, so I thought I'd read some of the essential reads in the genre, such as Shelley's Frankenstein and Stoker's Dracula, among others. I can say without a doubt that Frankenstein blows Dracula out of the water, both in its literary style and structure, as well as its extremely modern conceptual and thematic material. Dracula is still a good read in its own right; but as Frankenstein excels is in its relative brevity, Dracula meanders and has a much more sluggish pace, partly due to its romantic and needlessly wordy style. (Frankenstein has the stylistic choices associated with Romanticism as well, but it's much more trim). The writing styles change a bit as it switches perspectives of the principal characters, which breaks it up a bit, but it also makes it feel a bit disjointed and odd. More of a chore to read than I thought it'd be unfortunately. That said, it has plenty of memorable scenes, settings and characters, and still has a sense of modernity to it that can be very much appreciated.
3.5/5 for me.
