Wie Schnee so weiß by Marissa Meyer
3.0
tl;dr no major differences from the rest of the series
This book had some good and some bad. Like it is with most books in series - your opinion won't change much after this. If you like the series so far, you'll like this, and if you didn't like it so far, then, why are you still here?
I was a bit skeptical about Winter as the new character, but I ended up liking her and the way she was written. We finally get to see Luna, which has worldbuilding with good parts (like how they need artificial light to imitate the day and night cycle of the Earth) and parts I thought were lacking (the entire "people are oppressed" felt very "thing bad" and could have used some fleshing out or more inside voices).
This made some of the plot feel very...hard to believe. A bunch of things happened because a character gives a big speech and everyone goes "Yeah!" and we are meant to believe that that has not happened before and is a completely new concept to everyone. This is mostly a mid part problem, it does hurt the book, but I don't think it ruined it.
The same goes for just hooow many times a character stayed behind to distract someone or otherwise got caught or split from the party in arbitrary "plot demands it" ways when there was a better solution right there (like, even literally being described by characters). Again, no deal breaker, but something that bothered me.
Finally, it seemed to me like two major scenes were likely cut - I can kinda see why, this one is a chonker, but I still thought that was a little sad.
I'd say these were the major issues, everything else was pretty in line with what we had so far. Some nice futuristic touches, characters overall likeable, and some cool parallels to the original fairy tale. And credits to this series for having not a single romance that I disliked, that seems to be kind of an achievement.
As for the ending, I'd say everything was resolved alright, it didn't feel like any major thing was left open and the book also took the time to see how things played out a little bit after the climax. It really did feel conclusive, and some specific moments did make it feel like something properly changed from before.
Overall, this series was an entertaining read that I enjoyed, but didn't love. If you're interested in the concept in general, it's worth giving a try.
