Liz Lighty has spent high school trying to do everything she can to avoid standing out. As one of the few black kids in her school this is tough, and she’s acutely conscious that people learning she’s gay might make things hard for her. So when she fails to achieve a scholarship to her desired university she thinks her only course is to enter the competition to win Prom Queen so she can use the prize money to fund her choice.
It’s hard to not love Liz. She’s doing her best to be herself, and we can see from her interactions with her friends and family that she’s fiercely loyal. She doesn’t always get it right, but she certainly does her best.
While the setting is not necessarily that appealing there’s plenty here to entertain, and it’s such a joy to see someone having the opportunity to enjoy their day.
