I looved the world that Jemisin built in this book and i find it so impressive how extensive it is and how planned out it is. I loved the appendix’s in the back, even though they put me to sleep a little bit, because the sheer dedication and elaborate worldbuilding is incredible. I don’t think i’ll ever be a fan of reading through dictionaries, no matter the universe.

The book constantly had me surprised and I loved every secret that was revealed and it was increasingly horrifying to learn more about the secrets of the world. I loved how things finally started to click for me near the end, especially the use of 2nd person for Essun. It was a little slow for me at times, but I feel immersed in this world and will be reading the next two books. Because I can’t resist it and need to talk about the worldbuilding again, this book raised the bar for my standards and i’m not sure how that’ll work out for me but BRAVO Jemisin.
