Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

5.0

After reading the first book in this series, I immediately put a hold on Take a Hint, Dani Brown at my library and excitedly waited for it to be available. Needless to say, expectations were high and I was a little worried I was getting too hyped. I reminded myself that just because I enjoyed Hibbert's writing before, didn't mean it would land two books in a row. At the end of the day though, book in hand, Hibbert really knocked it out of the park again. I loved this book and was so happy to officially find a new favourite author.

Hibbert's writing just speaks my language! Her romances are fun and make me giggle, while her characters still maintain complex backstories and interesting motivations. They are people who I can picture in my head as existing in the world, rather than just cardboard cut outs that are being smashed together.

I was especially happy with her handling of her bisexual protagonist. Any time a character identifies as bi or pan, my own little bi heart sings with joy, but there is always a little voice in the back of my head that tries to temper expectations. It was great to see a bi character being well written without falling into hurtful stereotyping. Hibbert doesn't just say, 'btw she's also bisexual' while writing a story about her falling for a man, but actually makes it part of her life in a responsible way. It makes it feel like more than just lip service, while also showing that bi characters aren't just limited to being shown in same-sex relationships. I love to see it and I am happy to see this positive rep happen more and more often in romance stories.
