An absolutely gorgeous middle-grade which manages to deftly balance the warmth and joy needed for this age group with discussion of challenging topics like race, class and immigration without sugar-coating or talking down. This would make an excellent class read for younger students to learn about the realities of the systemic injustices faced by many marginalised groups in America, particularly immigrants. I would love to hear recommendations for anything similar set in the UK!
