Martín Dihigo The Greatest Baseball Player You've Never Heard Of by Darren López
5.0
This book was EVERYTHING!! It’s so Black and I loved it! It’s about a relatively unknown Black baseball player from Cuba who ended his career with an induction into SEVEN different baseball halls of fame including National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Hispanic Heritage Hall of Fame! It talks about the challenges he experienced navigating the racist Jim Crow laws of the USA and how he improved his game to become an excellent curb ball hitter and also play every position on the field. Literally. It also talks about his time in the Negro Leagues which was also really appreciated cause I don’t feel like we have enough stories and accolades of the Negro League baseball players who made a way out of a bunch of racist laws, restricted opportunities and closed doors. I HIGHLY recommend this picture book (the illustrator really did their thing and was very intentionally with the illustrations they included) to ANYONE interested in baseball, Black history, or books from across the African diaspora.
