The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis

3.0

I like Connie Willis, and I like Connie Willis in goofy farce mode (To Say Nothing of the Dog, for example). I enjoyed this book but it really had very little to recommend. No appreciable twists or surprises in the plot (okay, maybe one, but it was so obvious I thought for sure it was going to be a double-twist, but no they just did the first one), fairly weak character work, and some bizarre choices to have things resolved off screen in anticlimactic ways. It was cute-ish and funny-ish. I was charmed by the Westerns-meet-UFOs elements, and I like the theme of human-to-nonhuman communication. The plot moves, at least, even if the stakes are perpetually muddy. The ending will leave you saying "okay, yeah, I can see it, I guess."

I will continue to read whatever Connie Willis writes, even as this book adds to my creeping feeling that she sometimes gets a little bored and throws it over the wall anyways. Oh well!
