The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
5.0
What a beautiful story about a smart and savvy 30-year-old woman in 1950’s India.
Lakshmi Shastri is a henna artist, abortionist & healer who fled a violent marriage thirteen years earlier and worked her way into the good graces of the Jaipur elites.
When a sister she doesn’t know exists (Radha) shows up at her door, with her estranged husband, Hari, Lakshmi finds herself dealing with several complications.
This story explores the value of alternative medicine, the power of wealth and lies, the bond of sisterhood, and the resilience of a woman on a mission to live the life she chooses for herself.
I don’t think I would have picked this book up on my own (it was a book club pick). I enjoyed the story and the history I learned along the way. I appreciated that the author included a list of characters, a glossary, and several recipes and descriptions as well.
