A Light Most Hateful by Hailey Piper
3.0
“Sunflower’s an ocean. Check out the world she’s flooded.”
A small town drive-in, a forbidden crush, a monster stepping out of a storm. “Light” brought Piper’s big, bold dream to fruition, riding a high of teenage fluster and nightmarish enthusiasm. The horrific circumstances that unfold are cut with the unique camaraderie of being a queer teen in the sticks. But then there’s just…more horrific circumstances right after. The name of the game is “belonging” and sometimes we lose.
There was so much going on and the style fought the plot. As if writing in one of her translucent, stained glass labyrinths: we can almost see the story but it’s drowned in noise. A discordant narrative works really well in horror as it adds to chaos and calamity but there’s gotta be some amount of clarity for guidance.
3/5 A rad concept underneath…everything else.
