1.5

Well this book was a whole lot of disappointing and eye rolling. In all honesty, I'm not too sure why I downloaded this book but I saw it in my library and thought I'd give it a go. Shame I did.

This book follows Neaveh, a researcher who has to hide her true identity as a half djinn. However, she gets approached by a fallen angel, Damien, who comes to her with a deal. After Neaveh’s friend is kidnapped she knows she has to take the offered deal to save her best friend’s life.

I'm starting this off by saying I don't think I have anything good to write about this book. The only reason this is getting a 1.5 star rating is because I think the plot could have been interesting if the execution was significantly better.

Let's start with the biggest thing that I hated: the writing. The writing is honestly terrible. Throughout the whole book, it feel like the “humour” is forced. I put humour in inverted commas because quite frankly, it wasn't funny at all to me. It came across as if the author was trying so hard to make the FMC funny that it just ended up being incredibly cringy. I was rolling my eyes all throughout and had to stop reading several times due to the horrific writing.

Speaking of the female main character, she’s rather irritating. It may partially be because of how the author wrote the book as it is all told from her perspective. However, she was incredibly naive and immature, yet still manages to think very highly of herself. I know people love a strong-headed badass character but she was a very poor attempt at one.

Damien’s character was also a very poor attempt at the tall, dark, handsome and mysterious MMC. I guess you could call him “mysterious” but I found him to be dull and lacking personality. I'm just glad he wasn't a try hard at being “cool” or “bad guy” though that did peak through at times.

The relationship between Damien and Neaveh is honestly painful to read about. There is no chemistry. Damien is unreceptive. Neaveh is just… cringy. There is no depth (which is apparently a common theme in this book) or build-up or any sort of emotional connection other than “omg he's hot”. I think there was meant to be a hint of “I don't want to find him attractive and I hate that I do” but that was done so poorly. It was so rushed that there was nothing to show the reader the build up of the relationship.

In addition to the relationship, the plot was also incredibly rushed. There is no tension building, the world building was near to nothing and any information you did get was just dumped on you. Half the information was filler which added nothing to the story.

Another thing that bothered me was how Neaveh, who has literally used her powers once in her entire life, is suddenly an expert at pretty much all the things she does simply by reading a book. She also allegedly has a photographic memory (which she apparently literally takes a screenshot by closing her eyes in chapter 4) which is convenient.

The actual plot would have been interesting if the whole thing actually had a bit more depth to it. It was all so fast paced. No detail, no descriptions, no struggle. Everything felt far too convenient and too easy going. No interesting plot twists because the attempt at a plot twist was so easy to see from miles away.

By the end of the book, I was just speed reading, trying to finish the first book so I can never pick up the second book and just delete this off my kindle forever. If you're looking for a book with loveable characters that you can make connections with, decent writing and a rich plot, do not touch this book with a 10ft pole. I think this must be one of the worst books I've read in a hot minute but you win some, you lose some. This is definitely a loss.
