Lore Olympus: Volume One by Rachel Smythe

4.0

I was really charmed by Rachel Smythe's take on the myth of Hades and Persephone, which takes place in a more modern fantasy setting, with smartphones and cars. A trigger warning off the top notes that the book, which originated as a hit webtoon, explores many dark themes such as emotional abuse, sexual trauma and toxic relationships, and Smythe doesn't gloss over that, but neither is it drawn out for shock value. The art is wildly colourful in a mostly cool palette, with warm colours cleverly brought in to evoke different feelings. It manages to be both dramatic and adorable.

My only quibble was that the printing in the book had several really dark panels where it was hard to really see much detail, particularly in the early party scenes and in the Underworld. In the webcomic, read on an illuminated screen, the same panels feel a bit more vivid and clear. Another thing that I think worked better in the webcomic was the use of occasional black and white panels. In the webcomic you scroll through one panel at a time and those panels break up the visuals but they also feel like they make sense. In the book, where some asymmetrical panels are turned into squares and many panels are sometimes squeezed onto one page, the placement of the monochromatic panels sometimes feels like it just doesn't make sense. Personally I'll be continuing the series on Webtoons because it just felt like a more perfect experience.
