Decent short story about the power dynamic between husbands and wives, the lack of medical aid and knowledge surrounding the mental health of women (namely during the time in which the story is set), and the prison of patriarchy.

I appreciated the linking of patriarchal households/family dynamics with the common gothic themes of haunted houses, dominant male superiors, damsels in distress and forced isolation. That was nicely done.

I wouldn’t say the book was all that interesting though—especially the first half as it lends itself to a pretty mundane recount of daily domestic life. But as you read on and come to terms with how unreliable the narrator truly is, it becomes a thought-provoking piece.
