Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawks
funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
3.0
This book does what it says on the box - it’s a recollection of a hitchhiking trip around Ireland with a fridge.
It’s lighthearted, it’s definitely dated - mobile phones are a shiny new thing in this book, and it’s weird reading it post pandemic where I would be even more hesitant to spend all my time with lots of strangers in packed pubs.
It’s a story of a stupid bet blown wildly out of proportion in a frivolous and fun way, told by a white male British comedian in the 90’s so the language used is what you’d expect, and I really could’ve gone without the commentary on him trying to have sex with various women throughout.
I hear they’ve made a movie and if I was going to recommend this story I’d probably suggest the movie on the grounds that some details could have been ditched no worries, and a movie takes less time to consume.
Still, it was nice to read about the generosity of strangers and the joys of travel from my living room.
