Box 21 by Anders Roslund and Borge Hellstrom

With Roslund and Hellstrom, you get what you might expect: bleak, violent and seedy. The Stockholm of the book is not the quaint and pretty city of your imagination. No, it’s a world of vicious thugs, pathetic (but dangerous) street dealers and brutal sex traffickers. Much like the teenage Lithuanians Lydia and Alena, life in Sweden is not what one might have hoped for.

While the novel is incredibly bleak and pessimistic, it moves at a breakneck pace. As dark and graphic as it is, I did enjoy revisiting the exhausted and melancholy police detectives Sundkvist and Grens.

Grim stuff, but I’ll keep reading.
