A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
4.0
It's Harry Potter, but there are no teachers and the school is semi-sentient and full of roaming monsters, and the MC is probably destined to be an evil dark queen (handily, she's named Galadriel) but refuses to use such powers. And everyone can speak at least two languages (El is learning Middle & Old English, Hindi, Latin, German, and more).
This was a lot of fun. Good characterization, worldbuilding that ended up making some sense but was also spectacularly weird, and interesting mysteries. Content warning for profanity & mild sexual references, but otherwise, I would recommend this to older teens/adults!
(I think people bothered by Harry Potter-type magic will not mind the magic here as much; it's pretty clearly divided into good/evil kinds and the main characters ultimately avoid the evil kind. The power source is clear and is not any sort of evil spirits. There are passing references to Wicca at one point but this does not figure significantly in the story.)
