The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

"We were like gods at the dawning of the world, and our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other"

When I think of books that inspire me, The Song of Achilles is on the list.

The way Madeline Miller writes the tale of Patroclus and Achilles is simply stunning, each word carved carefully into the pages fills you up quicker than you think. A story about war has never sounded as beautiful as it did in The Song of Achilles.
“He smiled, and his face was like the sun”

There were so many instances where I read the words and felt my breath lost. It was something completely different because I felt like I was standing in the middle of the war or in the middle of the scene, watching every situation with Patroclus and Achilles play out.
“A surety rose in me, lodged in my throat. I will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me”

The love that fell between Patroclus and Achilles was written in a way that was not abrupt or sudden but eased into the words we read. It was a gentle kind of romance but with the brute force of soulmates, star-crossed lovers where you least expect it.

The Song of Achilles was something I never thought that would stick with me, but now, I don't think I could ever forget it.
“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun"
