I find the writing awkward to the extent that I was not able to immerse myself in the book. The dialogue is natural but more in the boring-guy-at-the-bar way than the interesting-person-you-actually-want-to-talk-to way. The book is slow in overall plot and sudden in action scenes. The upper and lower echelons of society are actually called the "Cloud people" and the "Wretches". 

The universe just doesn't make sense to me either. If the "Cloud people" are continuously using an electromagnetic pulse to kill electronics outside of the walls, why would electronic parts be one of the most highly sought trade objects? Why would the "Cloud people" expend resources, time, and energy policing the "Wretches" and gassing them regularly to sterilize them, when they don't provide anything needed by those in the walls? Why not just gas them one time with something fatal rather than take the time to repeatedly sterilize them so that they eventually die out from failure to reproduce? And FFS ... this is a post-apocalyptic scarcity world - the oceans have "all but dried up", large portions of the planet are covered in desert, and there is only <i>one</i> habitable city on the planet. So tell me why oh why are the police using water cannons for crowd control?

I thought about finishing it in order to see if there were any answers to these questions, but I just can't do it. Especially since I don't think anyone could possibly have answers that would make any of that make sense.
