That was a wild ride. I hated being with Merricat in We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but loved being with Eleanor despite both being quite truly batshit.
The paranormal moments weren't really that terrifying by modern standards, but the descent we see in Eleanor's narrative into unreliable was a treat. Once she goes on her jaunt about the house, I was locked in and my stomach was tensed for no good reason.
Modern horror junkies aren't going to love this, but this was easily the better of the two books from Jackson that I have read.
