Flem by Rebecca Rosen

4.0

Gorgeous art, but wow, what a dark and upsetting story. I picked up FLEM at the local library because I was drawn in by the cover and the first few pages looked amazing. Rebecca Rosen is clearly a top-notch graphic artist who can draw on different styles and who makes impactful use of colour. The description of the story about a troubled art student who joins a separatist feminist art collective sounded like it would be a dark comedy, but instead it's a raw story of deep childhood trauma, serious familial mental illness, including depictions of child abuse, animal suffering, addiction and death. The quality of the art was such that I don't regret reading it, but I do regret reading it right before bed.
