The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Well this is painful.
I read this, loved it, wrote a whole review about how much I enjoyed it despite some of its flaws, then I came to the reviews and discovered something that unfortunately makes me view the entire book in a different light, and has effectively ruined my enjoyment of it.
It took me a long time to read this book, I know it sky rocketed TJ Klune to fame, and he's the author of one of my favorite books, [b:Wolfsong|62039417|Wolfsong (Green Creek, #1)|T.J. Klune|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1686575943l/62039417._SY75_.jpg|49474397]. I know many friends have loved this book. I didn't read anything into it beforehand, and wish I would have. I just cant overlook the fact that he explicitly says he based this book off of the Sixties Scoop.
It's one thing to examine real world prejudice and discrimination in fantasy, and another to base your story off of a horrific real life event, and make it a feel good story that diminishes the real harm that happened to real people.
I'm not going to leave a rating or get into it more deeply - if you want more information, some of the top one star reviews go into more detail than I will. I get why many love this book, and it's really unfortunate, but it's not something I can ignore.
