An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
adventurous
mysterious
medium-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Loveable characters? No
2.5
I really wanted to like this, but I was surprised that the narrative voice is so annoying. At times, it definitely felt as if a middle-aged man were writing from a young woman’s perspective and I definitely cringed in those moments.
That being said, the story is pretty interesting. I like how it explores the involvement of social media in a “first contact” situation. Aliens are always very fun to read about, and I loved the weird and random elements like grape jelly (gruesome, but a little funny).
I’ll be reading the next one, but I will likely continue to gripe about the writing. Sorry, Hank.
