Teeth by Zaya Feli
5.0
*I received an advance copy of this book*
As a fan of Zaya Feli's debut trilogy, I'm thrilled to say that Teeth embodies everything I enjoyed in the author's previous books. Between the complex, morally gray characters and the fast-paced historical fantasy plot, Teeth is a strong first installment to the Icefjord duology. The Norse-inspired setting was well-researched, with just enough detail included in the novel to make it an immersive, atmospheric read.
I'm an advocate of genre fiction featuring LGBT+ characters and this book is exactly the kind of story I like. It doesn't focus on the characters' sexualities or any kind of drama related to that, which is great. There's no real romantic plot yet (the author has said that an m/m relationship will be featured in the second book), but one of the three point-of-view characters is canonically asexual.
In the interest of keeping this spoiler-free, I won't say much about the plot--just that the main twist was a complete surprise, but in retrospect, all the clues were there. Between that and the author's knack for writing dialogue, this will be a fun book to re-read! There are also beautiful pieces of art between the chapters; like the cover, they were created by the author.
I'd recommend this book to readers who like their historical fantasy with a magical twist and anyone who wants stories with gay characters that aren't centered on discussions of sexuality. Can't wait to read the second half of this series!
