A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.5/5 ⭐️s
I just inhaled this book in practically one sitting and LOVED it! The plot has picked up, the animosity between Poppy and Casteel is delicious, and we finally got into the nitty gritty of this world Jennifer L Armentrout has created.
One of my biggest issues the first time I read From Blood And Ash was the way she sacrificed plot to world build in the first half of the book. Yes, the second half more than makes up for it, but it wasn’t enjoyable to slog through all the details to get to the good stuff. In this book? That is so not a problem! Armentrout hits the ground running, and I feel like the pace barely let up throughout all 600+ pages. Such a welcome improvement that would’ve hooked me even without the other pluses I discuss below!
The character development was...just...*chef’s kiss* I loved starting off with the animosity between Poppy and Casteel and how it slowly evolved throughout the book. And the side characters were so much more interesting in this book! Delano? I love him. And Kieran’s never allowed to be hurt. My heart couldn’t stand it. All of the Atlantians and Wolven had depth that I just didn’t feel with the court members and Royal Guards Poppy knew in Masodonia. Maybe now that her fantasy world was established, Armentrout had time to expand on the people around Poppy and Casteel.
Speaking of this world...It felt like we were actually thrust into the mist of it all with Poppy in this book. In FBAA, the main outline was there (Ascended, Atlantians, Maiden, Wolven...), but I felt like I was outside looking in. Like a snow globe. Now that the basis of this world is established, Armentrout was able to dive into the details, and it made me feel like I was there!
Overall, I loved this book! I think the only thing I would’ve changed is less *joking* about stabby stabby Poppy and more of her actually doing it. I like when she lashes out - it keeps things interesting!
